A Warm and Joyful Family Drama

Nine years after emigrating overseas, Chi-shing returns to Hong Kong during the summer holidays with his wife and daughter Michelle to visit relatives. They stop by the ancestral home at the end of Tsing Yi Chung Mei and run into Uncle Tung, an old neighbor, which brings back many memories. Seeing the ancestral house long in disrepair, Chi-shing decides to use his time in Hong Kong to fix it up. Though the house is shabby and the couplets on the door are faded, he believes it’s worth preserving—so he starts the renovation with a pair of Door Gods.

Michelle, who originally had no desire to revisit the old house, happens to catch a street play about the Door Gods and becomes intrigued. In the play, the Door Gods lament that while Tin Hau (the Heavenly Queen) is still revered, they themselves have been forgotten. Just as they consider whether they need to “transform,” they mistakenly take Santa Claus for a thief on Christmas Eve! It turns out Santa has successfully built a corporate-style operation. Understanding the Door Gods’ worries, he invites the pair to join forces. Caught between tradition and innovation—and dazed by the impact of AI—how will the Door Gods choose? Michelle gradually understands her father’s intentions and sets off toward the old house with her mother...
